The design brief was to create a light filled and thermally efficient family home. The home was required to access abundant northern sunlight so as to mitigate the need for artificial heating and to complement that result with superior insulation and glazing. Priority was to be given to creating a light, airy and warm family space that connected with northern sun and a child friendly yard. The clients made it very clear that they preferred a modest, well designed and carefully built home over an unnecessarily large home that lacked interest, detail and quality. The design would need to offer clear and effective segregation of public living spaces, parents bedroom and children’s quarters.
The character of the home was inspired by mid-century design elements including flat roofs, full height glazing to the ceiling, generous eave overhangs, integrated joinery and textured surfaces including a stone wall that was required to be prominent both inside and out.
